REPORT
ON CONSCIENTISATION PROGRAMME
Awareness
about Life Style Diseases: Obesity.
“The Greatest Wealth is
Health”
INTRODUCTION
Life style diseases are defined as diseases
linked with the way the people live their life. This is commonly caused by alcohol,
drug, smoking, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating. Diseases that
impact on our life are heart diseases, stroke, obesity, and hyper-tension and
type II diseases.
There are number of causes of lifestyle
diseases. The most common cause of life style disease is diet and life style.
Some are controllable factors and some are not controllable. The controllable
factors relate to behaviour, habits, thoughts or practices. The uncontrollable
factors relate to life style diseases include age, race, gender and heredity.
Obesity:
Obesity is a chronic life style disease which
poses health risk to the health of an individual. Also, obesity is the easiest
recognizable medical problem, but is very difficult to deal with. People
usually confuse obesity with overweight. Overweight is gaining of a few extra
pounds. A person is considered obese when the total body weight is minimum 10%
more than the recommended weight for his/her body structure and height. It is
very important to treat the problem as early as possible. Obese children
between the age of 13 and 14 have 80% chances of growing into obese adults. The
obesity problem starts from the age of 5 and continue till adolescence.
As part of B.Ed. curriculum, Concentisation
Programme has to be done by student-teachers during their School Internship
Programme. The most relevant topic for adolescents among all the life style is
obesity. Hence, we have selected this topic.
RELEVANCE
OF THE PROGRAMME
Paulo Freire defines ‘Conscentisation’ as the
ability to “intervene in reality in order to change it”. Critical consciousness,
conscientisation is a popular Education and social concept developed by
Brazilian pedagogue and educational theorist Paulo Freire. This concept mainly
focuses on achieving an in-depth understanding of the world, allowing for the
perception and exposure of social and political contradictions. It also
includes taking action against the oppressive elements in one’s life that are
illuminated by that understanding.

PLANNING,
PREPARATION, PROCEDURE
Planning:
A
Group of 4 members (Aparajita, Nisha, Sruthila and Shwetha) were assigned the
duty of conducting Conscientisation Programme in St.Thomas Higher Secondary School
on 12/01/2018. The Conscientisation Programme was conducted in the class 7A. As
per the discussion of the Group members, apt and relevant topic “Awareness
about Life style Disease: Obesity” was presented before the students.
Distribution of work was done equally among all the group members. Students
were taken to the Audio-visual Room. Power Point presentation with relevant
pictures and video clips related to life style disease of obesity was presented
before the students to make the class more interesting. Sufficient planning was
done to make the Conscientisation Programme fruitful.
Preparation:
In
order to present the topic in an effective manner, sufficient teaching -
learning resources were prepared by the Group members. A brief introduction
about the life style diseases, its causes and effects on human health were presented
by Shwetha with the help of Power point slides. Sruthila presented on what is
Obesity and what are the causes for obesity using a video clip and power point slides.
The effects of obesity, its treatment and solution were presented by Aparajita
with the help of power point slides. Finally, the topic was concluded and the
feedback was obtained from the students by Nisha.
The
Conscientisation programme which was conducted was conducted effectively.
Students were interested in knowing about the topic and they developed
consciousness about the ill effects of obesity. Now-a-days, obesity is the
common problem among adolescents due to lack of physical exercise and unhealthy
food habits. Students gained awareness about obesity through this
Conscientisation programme.
Procedure:
Introduction - Total
30 minutes was allotted for conducting the Conscientisation programme. The
topic was introduced by Shwetha. Life style diseases are defined as diseases
linked with the way people live. They are diseases caused by Habits, Behaviours
and practices. Controllable and uncontrollable factors are responsible for the
life style diseases. Controllable factors include diet, body weight, physical
activity, smoking and drug abuse. Uncontrollable factors include age, gender,
ethnicity and heredity. These things
were presented in the Introduction part.
Obesity:
Content was further developed by Sruthila and Aparajita. Video was presented by
Sruthila. Obesity is an excess of body fat frequently resulting in a
significant impairment of health longevity. People are generally considered
obese when their Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a
person’s weight by the square of the person’s height, is over 30 kg/m2,
with the range 25 – 30 kg/m2 defined as overweight. The causes for
obesity are excessive food, lack of exercise, genetics, use of drugs, lack of
sleep and changing society. These facts were presented by Sruthila.
Obesity
is a serious chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in
our body. People who suffer from overweight or obese have a much greater risk
of developing serious conditions such as Heart disease, Type II diabetes,
Gallbladder disease, Stoke, mental illness, pain in body and Osteoarthritis.
There is no single or simple solution to the obesity epidemic. It is a complex
problem and there has to a multi-faceted approach to cure the illness.
Many
of the strategies that produce successful weight loss and maintenance will help
prevent obesity. Practicing proper eating habits and increasing physical
activities or exercises will play a vital role in controlling obesity. A more
effective way to prevent obesity is by choosing an active life style. If the
problem is not under one’s control, one can go for treatment. All these details
were presented by Aparajita with the help of Power point slide.
The concluding session was handled by
Nisha. It is very necessary to control obesity. Now-a-days adolescents are more
likely to eat junk food and they spend most of their time watching T.V and
sitting with computers. This leads to obesity and their unhealthy food habits.
Hence, one who suffers from obesity, has to change his/her routine work to
control the problem of obesity. Nisha concluded that, by providing awareness in
the minds of the people about such kind of issues like obesity, we can bring
changes in their attitude and life style in general.
The
groups like Children, Racial and Ethnic groups, women also face the risk of
obesity. This needs to be realized and preventive measures have to be taken at
the right time. All these additional points were also presented by Nisha using
power point slides. Finally, at the end of the Programme, feedback
questionnaire were distributed to students and obtained their feedback on the
Programme to understand about their response and involvement in the class.
ANALYSIS
OF THE CONSCIENTISATION PROGRAMME
BASED
ON STUDENTS’ FEEDBACK
The
feedback questionnaire contain 10 questions related to the awareness programme,
the suitability of the topic, the presentation of the topic and the changes to
be made in future in one’s life style. By analyzing the feedback questionnaires
collected, it can be noticed that on completing the Awareness programme
majority of the students are aware about the life style disease: obesity and
the need to include a healthy diet and proper exercise in their daily
life. It can also be noticed that most
of the students are found to be unable to suggest measures to those who suffer
from obesity. As a whole, all the students have responded very positively
towards the Conscientisation Programme.
CONCLUSION:
The topic “Life style disease – obesity” was
selected for the Concentisation Programme. The topic found most releant for the
students.
Life
style diseases are preventable for children if parents set them on the correct
path, as early life decisions and influences can have impact on people’s life
later on. Obesity can be prevented through a well balanced life style through
healthy eating and exercise. Self motivation is extremely necessary in achieving
weight loss. Because, obesity is a serious
problem and its effects are harmful. Overweight and obesity can be prevented
through a well balanced life style and through exercise. Prevention can come
about by a person by practicing 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily or by
doing 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week.
